The Monterey Peninsula Unified School District and Seaside High School are pleased to announce that senior and double bassist, Andrea Chavez, has been selected as a member of the National Youth Orchestra 2 for the 2023 season. Each year, the National Youth Orchestra 2 invites only six to seven bassists from across the country to participate in the program.
Andrea, along with musicians from across the country, will spend the month of July in New York City rehearsing and preparing to perform in Carnegie Hall. She and the orchestra will also go on to represent the United States on tour in the Dominican Republic.
Andrea will graduate Seaside High School on June 2 with the Class of 2023 at the Monterey County Fairgrounds. During her freshman year, she started taking lessons with renowned chamber player Aleksey Klyushnik. She has been playing the double bass for six years now. In addition to being in the advanced orchestra at Seaside High School, under the leadership of teacher Jessica Baudot, she has been part of the Youth Music Monterey County honors orchestra for four years. Additionally, Andrea is a member of the chamber group at Youth Music Monterey County, a group that focuses on bringing music into the community. Last year Andrea was invited to perform at the Youth Artist’s Showcase by the Carmel Bach Festival, and has also. participated in the California All-State Ensembles for two years.
