October 2024
Every year in the third week of October, National School Bus Safety Week (October 21 - 25, 2024) is recognized across the country by schools and sponsored by the National School Transportation Association, the National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services, the National Association for Pupil Transportation, the Pupil Transportation Safety Institute, and school bus manufacturers and suppliers.
Studies have proven that the most dangerous part of the school bus ride for children is when they get on and off the bus. The purpose of National School Bus Safety Week is for parents, students, teachers, motorists, and school bus drivers to recognize the importance of school bus safety.
In the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District, we praise our 35 drivers and Transportation staff members for the work they do daily to transport students safely to and from school, athletics, activities and field trips.
MPUSD would like to remind all motorists to be extra cautious while driving through school zones and neighborhoods, and reiterate laws regarding school buses, school zones, and school bus stops, including:
- Flashing yellow lights mean the bus is about to make a stop and you should slow down.
- Flashing red lights and stop signs mean the bus is stopped and children may be entering or exiting the bus.
- Passing a stopped bus is illegal and can result in a fine.
- If you are traveling the opposite direction of a stopped school bus, you are required to stop if the road is less than four lanes.
