Eight schools in the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District have been recognized by California PBIS Recognition System for their successful implementation of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) at the platinum, gold and silver levels.
“We are extremely proud of our schools and their commitment to implementing consistent PBIS practices,” said PK Diffenbaugh, Superintendent, Monterey Peninsula Unified School District. “Receiving these awards reflect their excellence in the implementation of the core features of PBIS.”
The schools and their respective award designations are:
- Platinum: Del Rey Woods Elementary, Dual Language Academy of the Monterey Peninsula, Monte Vista School, and Olson Elementary School
- Gold: La Mesa School
- Silver: Marina Vista Elementary Arts Academy, Los Arboles Middle School, Walter Colton Middle School
MPUSD’s schools’ name are displayed on the California PBIS website and were posted prominently at the 8th annual California PBIS Conference in Sacramento earlier this month.
California PBIS initiated its first statewide effort in 2015 to implement a recognition system to acknowledge schools for implementing PBIS with fidelity to the national framework. Schools apply to be recognized as Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Platinum PBIS schools.
“We sincerely appreciate your hard work and commitment to implementing PBIS with fidelity and creating the conditions to maximize social, emotional, and behavioral outcomes for ALL students,” said California PBIS in a congratulatory letter. “Your dedication and commitment to the students, families, and communities of your respective districts is a major contributing factor to the excellence in education in the state of California.”
California PBIS defines PBIS as a framework for enhancing the adoption and implementation of a continuum of evidence-based interventions to achieve academically and behaviorally important outcomes for all students.
As a framework, the emphasis is on a process or approach, rather than a curriculum, intervention, or practice. An important component of this practice is the supportive relationship between positive school- and classroom- wide culture and individual student success.
