June is LGBTQ+ Pride Month, a time dedicated to honoring the 1969 Stonewall riots in Manhattan, a pivotal moment in the Gay Liberation Movement in the United States. Pride Month not only recognizes the significant influence LGBTQ+ individuals have had around the world, but also raises awareness of the ongoing challenges facing the LGBTQ+ community.
In alignment with the values of the FAIR Education Act, which mandates the inclusion of LGBTQ+ contributions in California's history and social studies curriculum, the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District is committed to fostering an inclusive environment. This Act, effective since January 1, 2012, ensures that the representation of LGBTQ+ individuals in education is fair, accurate, inclusive, and respectful.
LGBTQ+ individuals, particularly youth, often face discrimination and are at a higher risk of suicide, homelessness, and bullying. MPUSD recognizes the importance of creating a safe and welcoming environment for all students and staff. Our district promotes diversity as a core principle, ensuring that everyone is protected from harassment and violence.
MPUSD acknowledges the struggles and triumphs of the LGBTQ+ community throughout U.S. history and sees June as an opportunity for reflection and celebration. In support of this, the MPUSD Governing Board of Education will officially recognized June 2024 as LGBTQ+ Pride Month through a resolution (to be adopted on May 28, 2024). We encourage all district schools to observe this occasion with appropriate instructional activities and to raise the Pride flag throughout the month to signify our solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community.
By celebrating Pride Month, MPUSD reaffirms its dedication to diversity and the protection of our most vulnerable students, ensuring they feel a sense of belonging and support at every school site. Join us in honoring LGBTQ+ Pride Month and promoting a more inclusive future for all.
