This year six Monterey Peninsula Unified School Districts schools in Seaside became official community schools. The schools are:
- Del Rey Woods Elementary
- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. School of the Arts
- Dual Language Academy of the Monterey Peninsula
- Ord Terrace Elementary School
- Seaside High School
- Seaside Middle School
As part of this new designation, each school sites has a dedicated community school coordinator and these new coordinators are just getting started.
What is a community school coordinator? According to the Coalition of Community Schools, an initiative of the Institute for Educational Leadership, the community school coordinator works collaboratively with the school principal and other school support staff to design, develop and/or implement Community School programming including: family and student support services, health services, enrichment activities including those that occur during the school day, after school and summer, family and community engagement activities, and community sponsorship, partnership, and volunteer infrastructure.
From making our communities safer and more welcoming to providing essential services, community schools coordinators are committed to creating thriving learning environments. Coordinators are a major backbone of our schools, ensuring every student and family gets the support they need to succeed.
Join us in thanking these incredible champions during Community Schools Coordinator Week from September 15-21, 2024. Together, we're building stronger, safer, and more inclusive schools
