Celebrating School Board Recognition Month: Honoring Our Board of Trustees

January 2025 marks School Board Recognition Month, a time to honor the invaluable contributions of school board members to our community and school system. At the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District (MPUSD), we are proud to join over 1,000 local educational agencies and more than 5,000 school board members across California in celebrating the dedication and service of our Board of Trustees.

The role of public education is both complex and essential, providing not only academic instruction but also a supportive environment that families rely on for their children’s growth and well-being. Our school district serves as a cornerstone of support, a place where students are encouraged to thrive academically and socially. Families across our community trust MPUSD to offer an inclusive, nurturing environment where students are equipped with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed. Meeting these expectations requires commitment, compassion, and a strategic approach—values our Board of Trustees brings to the table each day.

Our seven trustees – Tom Jennings, Dr. Bettye Lusk, Veronica Miramontes, Sarah Ofstedal, Jeff Uchida, Maiaika Velazquez, and Dr. Amanda Whitmire – embody this commitment. Together, they work tirelessly to set the direction and vision for the district, direct resources to areas of greatest need, and monitor progress toward district goals, with student achievement always at the heart of their efforts. By collaborating with the superintendent as a governance team, our trustees ensure that MPUSD remains accountable to the public while advocating for a robust, supportive educational experience.

This month, we express our deep gratitude to our MPUSD Board of Trustees for their dedication to the community and their commitment to building a bright future for every student. We invite our community to join us in recognizing their vital work and contributions.
