MPUSD Recognizes National School Library Month | April 2025

April is National School Library Month, a time to recognize the essential role school libraries and librarians play in transforming learning and fostering a love of reading. The Monterey Peninsula Unified School District prioritizes literacy as a cornerstone of student success. Through its Reading is Key initiative, launched districtwide a few years ago, and its Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) Goal #2, which focuses on early literacy, the district is committed to ensuring that all students develop strong reading skills from an early age.

Across MPUSD, every one of our 10 elementary and TK-8 schools, two middle schools, and three comprehensive high schools features either a library or a makerspace, offering students access to books, digital resources, and innovative learning opportunities. These spaces serve as hubs for research, creativity, and discovery, empowering students to explore new ideas and broaden their perspectives.

Established by the American Association of School Librarians in 1985, National School Library Month highlights the critical role of libraries in fostering literacy and lifelong learning. Since its inception, school libraries have remained vital in promoting equitable access to knowledge and supporting student achievement.

Throughout April, MPUSD encourages students, families, and educators to celebrate the impact of school libraries by participating in activities that promote reading and learning. Whether checking out a new book, exploring digital resources, or engaging in literacy-based programs, we invite our school communities to embrace the joy of reading.

At a time when access to books and information is more important than ever, MPUSD remains committed to championing literacy and ensuring that every student has the opportunity to read, learn, and grow. Strong school libraries help build strong students—and strong students help build a brighter future.

Join MPUSD and its schools this month in celebrating National School Library Month and recognizing the invaluable contributions of our school libraries and librarians.
