“It’s an awesome thing to watch,” says Marshall Elementary School’s speech language pathologist Lindsay McCormick, about working with students and seeing their progress. “You get to see the light bulb moments and watch them achieve something that has been so hard for them.”

In her 16th year as a speech language pathologist with six of them at the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District, Lindsay says she just knew she wanted to work with kids when she began her career. Originally she was heading toward the psychologist path, but shadowed a speech language pathologist one day and she immediately switched her major.

As a speech language pathologist, Lindsay works with kids with articulation difficulties, such as having a hard time with sounds. She also engages with students who have language impairments with grammar or vocabulary, and even fluency challenges.

For Lindsay, her job is pretty rewarding. She says that her kids get to see her and play what they believe are ‘games’ when in reality they are working on techniques that help them hone their speech language skills. “If they come in motivated they will leave with more progression,” she says. “I (even) have kids not in speech ask to come see me.”

What inspires Lindsay is knowing that she’s making a difference and working together as a team. “We get to work with parents a lot, too, and help them to work with their kids. If we can impart our knowledge, parents can carry that over.”

“The culture and climate at Marshall Elementary School is so supportive,” says Lindsay. “I feel very happy at this site and in this district.”

Prior to MPUSD, Lindsay had the opportunity to work in two other school systems in Wilmington, North Carolina, and Virginia. She earned her undergraduate degree at James Madison University and her graduate degree from Longwood University, both in Virginia, in communication sciences and disorders.

Outside of work, she enjoys surfing, mountain biking, and even climbing.
